The Centre for Gender Equity/Equality (CGEE) of the University Grants Commission (UGC) has received numerous complaints about student-organized events in state universities being held without proper supervision, posing risks to student safety and wellbeing.
At its 1162nd meeting on 07 January 2026, the UGC issued an urgent directive requiring that all student-organized university events be conducted under the supervision of a responsible university officer until further notice. A staff member must be present during rehearsals, preparations, the event itself, and until all students have dispersed.
Events that fail to comply with this directive must not be held. Vice-Chancellors, Rectors, and Directors are instructed to ensure strict compliance and proper implementation.
