School Periods Reduced to 7 from January 2026 Under New Education Reforms
The Ministry of Education has announced a major reform in the school timetable, reducing the number of daily periods from 8 to 7, effective from January 1, 2026.
According to Education Ministry Secretary Nalaka Kaluwewa, the duration of each period will also be revised to 50 minutes, and school timetables will be adjusted accordingly.
As part of the reforms, the Ministry—alongside the National Institute of Education and Provincial Councils—plans to train 100,000 teachers specifically for Grades 1 and 6 within this year.
The reform initiative will roll out in all schools nationwide, starting with Grades 1 and 6, and aims to enhance the quality of foundational education.
Nalaka Kaluwewa shared these updates during the first in a series of awareness sessions for provincial, zonal, and divisional education officials, held last week at the North Central Provincial Council. (Source: Newswire)
