Sri Lanka Insurance Grants Special Suraksha Concessions for Students Affected by Adverse Weather

Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation General Ltd. has approved special concessions under the Suraksha Student Insurance Scheme for school students affected by adverse weather conditions, following a request made by the Ministry of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education.

These concessions apply to insurance claims arising from natural disasters such as floods, landslides, and cyclonic conditions that occurred between November 26 and December 31, 2025. Only incidents that took place during this period will be eligible for consideration.

Under the revised provisions, students who lost a parent or legal guardian due to disaster-related incidents will receive insurance benefits without income restrictions, subject to valid documentary evidence confirming the loss.

Sri Lanka Insurance further stated that outpatient benefits of up to LKR 20,000 will be provided for medical treatment, medicines, and laboratory tests related to disaster-caused injuries, even if such expenses are not included in the original insurance agreement.

Additionally, claims related to incidents between November 1 and November 26, 2025, may also be considered in cases where essential claim documents were destroyed due to the disaster. In such situations, benefits will be granted based on recommendations from school principals and Grama Niladhari officers.

If bills issued by private hospitals were lost, claimants must submit certified duplicate bills issued by the respective hospitals. For lost diagnosis cards from government hospitals, a medical confirmation letter containing patient details—such as name, age, diagnosis, and dates of admission and discharge—must be provided.

Furthermore, for all claims affected by disaster conditions between November 1 and December 31, 2025, the standard 90-day claim submission period has been extended by an additional 60 days, allowing a total of 150 days to submit claims.
