Uva Province Schools Closed Early Due to Adverse Weather Conditions

All schools in the Uva Province were closed at 11:30 a.m. today (09 January) due to prevailing adverse weather conditions, the Uva Provincial Director of Education announced.

Accordingly, all 892 schools in the province were affected by this decision. The director further stated that school principals have been granted full authority to make future decisions depending on the evolving situation.

Earlier, instructions had been issued to close all schools in the Badulla District at or before 11:00 a.m., taking into account the worsening weather conditions. Principals were also directed to take necessary measures to ensure the safe release of students and teachers.

These decisions were made based on the latest weather forecasts issued by the Department of Meteorology and the special landslide warnings issued by the National Building Research Organisation for the Badulla District. (Source: newswire)
