1. Written Examination Syllabus & Structure
Both Limited and Open competitive exams require candidates to sit for three papers. Each paper is 2 hours long, carries 100 marks, and requires a minimum of 40 marks to pass.
- Comprehension and Aptitude: Measures logical thinking, comprehension of complex paragraphs, summarizing ability, as well as numerical, textual, and figurative reasoning.
- Case Study: Tests problem-solving skills by presenting cases related to teacher education and school education.
- Elements of Education: Covers educational philosophy, sociology, the role of the teacher, education policies, planning, management, evaluation, teaching strategies, educational technology, and educational research.
2. Detailed Aptitude Testing Interview Marks (Max 50 Marks)
Marks are awarded based on documented proof in three main areas:
A. Additional Educational Qualifications (Max 20 Marks)
- Postgraduate Degree in Education or relevant subject: 20 marks
- Postgraduate Diploma: 10 marks
- Second Language qualifications (for Sinhala/Tamil subjects) with an oral test: 5 marks
B. English Language Proficiency (Max 15 Marks)
- English as a main subject of the Degree: 15 marks
- English as a main subject at G.C.E. A/L: 10 marks
- Diploma Certificate (not less than 1 year): 8 marks
- Certificate Course (not less than 6 months): 4 marks
- Credit / Very Good / Distinction for English Literature at G.C.E. O/L: 3 marks
- Credit / Very Good / Distinction for English at G.C.E. O/L: 2 marks
C. ICT Knowledge (Max 15 Marks)
- Postgraduate Degree in ICT: 15 marks
- Degree in ICT: 12 marks
- ICT as a main subject for the Degree: 10 marks
- Diploma Certificate in ICT (not less than 1 year): 8 marks
- Certificate Course in ICT (not less than 6 months): 6 marks
- Certificate Course in ICT (3 to 6 months): 4 marks
3. Practical Examination Marking Schemes (Max 50 Marks)
A minimum of 20 marks is required to pass. The marking criteria differ slightly between the Limited and Open exam candidates.
Limited Competitive Exam Practical:
- Preparation of Lecture Notes: 20 Marks
- Presentation (30 Marks total):
- Subject Contents: 10 marks
- Style of Presentation: 8 marks
- Approach: 4 marks
- Concise Presentation of Lecture Design: 4 marks
- Time Management: 4 marks
Open Competitive Exam Practical:
- Subject Contents: 20 Marks
- Style in the Presentation: 10 Marks
- Time Management: 10 Marks
- Approach: 5 Marks
- Summarizing: 5 Marks
4. Important Examination Conditions
- Maximum Sittings: No candidate is permitted to sit for either the Limited or Open examination for more than 3 sittings.
- Language Medium: The application, written examination, and practical examination must all be completed in a single, chosen language medium (Sinhala, Tamil, or English). This cannot be changed once applied.
- Experience Requirement (Limited Only): Must have an active and satisfactory service period of not less than 5 years in the Sri Lanka Teachers’ Service, Principals’ Service, or Education Administrative Service with all salary increments earned. The Open exam has no prior experience requirement.
